The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. In terms of design, the mini-computer is very similar to the earlier Model B, but the soc is a more powerful quad-core and the system has 1GB of RAM.
The Raspberry Pi 2 Model B features a Broadcom BCM2836 soc with four ARMv7 Cortex-A7 cores and a clock speed of 900MHz. According to the Raspberry Pi, the performance is six times higher than that of the Broadcom BCM2835 of the current B+ models. It has a soc with a single ARMv6 ARM11 core. The soc can also address more memory and the foundation has therefore doubled the amount of ram from 512MB to 1GB.
The foundation will sell the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B for the same price as the Model B+. That model can be found in the Pricewatch for a price starting at 26.90 euros. Both systems will continue to be offered side by side and the B+ will not receive a price reduction. The A+ will also remain available. The first batch of the Pi 2 Model B will consist of 100,000 units, The Register writes.
Update, 10.20: The Raspberry Pi Foundation has officially announced the new system. The computer can be equipped with various OSes, including Snappy Ubuntu Core and Windows 10.
