The developers of the Plex media center package have released a Windows version of their Media Server and a client for the Android operating system. The desktop client is still only available for Mac OS X.

The Windows edition of the Plex Media Server ensures that users are no longer tied to OS X when they want to set up a Plex environment. The media center package works with a separate front and back end, so that users can now use a Windows machine in addition to an Apple machine to stream media files to the various clients. For now, only the back-end will be available for Windows, the desktop client will remain exclusive to Mac OS X. Both the Media Server versions and the OS X client are free.

Mobile clients must be paid for. There was already an iPhone app, and an Android client was also introduced earlier this week. According to the developers, this offers almost all the functionality of the iOS app, except for the option to act as a virtual remote control. That function will be added in a next version and then the Android version will also receive support for tablets. When that version will be released is not yet known. The new client can be downloaded for $4.99 AndroidMarket be purchased.
