Double Fine Productions reports that Psychonauts 2 will be released in 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game is a sequel to the platform game from 2005. An exact release date has not yet been announced.

During The Game Awards, Double Fine showed a new announcement trailer for the platform game. The game was previously announced at the 2015 awards ceremony. In 2016, the studio reached its crowdfunding goal of $3.3 million and Psychonauts 2 has been in development ever since. Double Fine intended to release the game this year, but last year announced in a Christmas update video that the release was being delayed. The developer felt that the game did not yet meet its own quality requirements. As a result, it was not yet clear when Psychonauts 2 would be released.

Psychonauts 2 was made in collaboration with Starbreeze Studios, of Payday fame. The Swedish developer is currently in a turbulent financial situation following the flop of Overkill’s The Walking Dead, a first person shooter based on the franchise of the same name. According to Eurogamer, CEO Bo Andersson has resigned and an employee has been arrested for insider trading.

The first Psychonauts was released on April 19, 2005 for PC and PlayStation 2. The story revolves around Raz, short for Razputin, a boy with psychic powers who is recruited by the government. He ends up in a summer camp for children with the same gifts. There they train to become full-fledged Psychonauts, spies who use their powers to save the world.
