The Philips Hue app has received an update that introduces a new design and new functionalities. It is the first major update since May 2018, when the 3.0 release appeared. 4.0 allows users to switch between bridges and more options for light scenes.
According to Signify, more than a hundred changes have been made to the app. For the new functionalities, according to the head of technology George Yianni of Philips Hue, there have been several beta tests to arrive at this new release.
The smart lamps can be controlled better with the new app. There is now room for different light scenes on the home screen. In addition, a Signify pre-programmed scene can also be selected from a gallery. You can also switch between different Hue Bridges in this home screen.
In the 4.0 version of the Philips Hue app, routines are replaced by automations. This allows actions to be set such as turning off the lights when someone leaves the house. It is now also checked whether someone else is at home before the automation is carried out. Also, a specific time, sunrise or sunset can be chosen to start automation.
Furthermore, an entertainment area can be set in a 2.5D view. This allows users to set the exact height of the lamps. During setup, the lamps also change color, so that it is immediately clear which lamp is being adjusted.
Signify is also announcing some features it plans to add with an update later this summer. With this update, dynamic scenes are added, with which new lighting effects and transitions can be created according to the manufacturer. The 4.0 release can be downloaded from the Google Play Store and App Store from Thursday.
