Google has provided its Nexus 5X and 6P smartphones with the November 2018 security update. That is probably the last update that the devices receive; Google previously said that guaranteed support would end in November this year.
Google released its monthly ota files and factory images this week, along with updates for the Nexus 5X and 6P. Both phones run on Android 8.1 and will receive the latest security patches with this update round.
Last year, Google extended official support for the devices by two months. Support was supposed to end in September 2018 after three years, but that was adjusted to November 2018.
On its support page for Nexus devices, Google writes when the guaranteed support ends. The manufacturer could still choose to continue with security updates for the devices, or to occasionally release a patch in the event of a serious vulnerability. In the past, Google has released updates for longer than stated on the support page. For example, an update was released for the Nexus 5 in December 2016, while support ended two months earlier.
LG’s Nexus 5X and Huawei’s 6P were the last devices in the Nexus series, with Google working with several manufacturers to release devices with a clean Android version. After that, Google started with its own Pixel smartphones.
