The console version of the popular sandbox game Minecraft has sold more than its Windows and OS X version. Patrick Geuder, data analyst at Mojang, announced this via Twitter. In total, Minecraft has sold almost 54 million across all platforms.

That the sales figures of the console version above that of the PC and Mac is quite unique. The game was originally only available for Windows and OS X and gained its immense popularity with its versions for those platforms. It is not known exactly how many times Minecraft has been sold per platform. Mojang, developer of Minecraft, only has a meter on his website that shows the number of sales of the Windows and OS X version. At the time of writing, that number is close to 15.8 million.

It is likely that the number of copies of Minecraft sold on consoles will continue to grow at a significant rate in the near future. This is mainly because the game will also be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PlayStation Vita around August. Currently, Minecraft is available on Windows, OS X, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iOS, and Android. The studio behind Minecraft raised 92 million euros with the game in 2013.
