Microsoft fixes bug in OneDrive for Business that reduced storage capacity

Microsoft has fixed an issue where the storage capacity of some OneDrive for Business customers was reduced to 1TB. Some professional customers could only open files that exceeded the default storage limit of 1TB in read-only mode.

The company said on Twitter that it had opened an investigation into the problem. According to Microsoft, the bug was discovered shortly after, and the solution was tested in limited circles and then rolled out to every OneDrive for Business user. As a temporary workaround, Microsoft advised system administrators to set individual storage quotas for OneDrive for Business users.

According to Microsoft, an “exception” in the OneDrive for Business systems was at the root of the problem. That exception would have failed to recognize some user licenses and rolled back the storage capacity to 1TB. According to BleepingComputer, the OneDrive for Business team rebalances each customer’s storage quota to the correct amount.

Update, 10:45 AM: Introduction modified. Only files that exceeded the 1TB storage limit could be opened in read-only mode. It used to say ‘files larger than 1TB’.
