LG will add support for Apple HomeKit and AirPlay 2 to its 2018 TVs later this year, the manufacturer said Monday, after the company previously denied it. Users have been asking for this functionality for some time.
The UK LG account reports on Twitter that HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support for 2018 TVs will be released later this year. That means that the OLED TVs with an 8 in the name, such as the B8, C8 and W8, will get the functionality.
At the end of August, the same Twitter account reported that the TVs from 2018 would not receive support for HomeKit and AirPlay 2. The tweet containing that has since been removed. Whether LG has reconsidered the decision or whether it was a miscommunication is not clear.
Since April this year, LG TV owners have been petitioning to add AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to 2018 models. Around the same time, a support document revealed that LG was working on a software update that would add functionality.
LG recently released the Apple TV app for its 2018 OLED TVs and the app is also coming to UHD LCD TVs that same year. However, when releasing the application, LG did not mention HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support.
AirPlay 2 is an Apple technique to stream videos, photos and music from an Apple device to supported televisions. HomeKit makes it possible to control TVs with the Apple Home app or with voice assistant Siri.
