Leica comes with the M10-D, a digital rangefinder camera that does not have a screen on the back. Photos cannot be viewed on the camera. However, it is possible to connect the camera to a smartphone via an app, in order to view photos.
Leica deliberately omits the screen on the M10-D, in order to give shooting the ‘analog feeling’. On the back of the camera is a large dial to set the exposure compensation. Apart from the absence of the screen, the camera is almost identical to the M10-P. Leica announced that device in August and is sold for the same price. Both devices have a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor.
The Leica M10-D can be connected to the Leica Photos app on a smartphone via WiFi. This works by scanning a QR code on the bottom of the camera. Many advanced camera settings can only be adjusted via the app, as there is no screen available on the M10-D itself. The app can also be used to display the image on the phone screen with live view, or to view the photos directly. It is also possible to connect an optional electronic viewfinder to the M10-D: the Leica Visoflex.
In 2016, Leica also released a digital rangefinder camera without a screen, the Leica MD. The new M10-D is the successor to that device. According to Transcontinenta, importer of Leica in the Benelux, the new model will be released ‘very soon’.
