Intel has announced that it has acquired approximately 1,700 patents related to mobile technology from InterDigital. Google has also bought patents for mobile technology, this time from Magnolia Broadband.
Intel will pay InterDigital approximately USD 375 million for the patent bundle. The patents cover, among other things, 3g, lte and the wireless 802.11 standard. For example, InterDigital has contributed to the development of the mobile standards wcdma, hsdpa, hsupa and lte-advanced. Intel hopes to complete the transaction in the third quarter. According to the company, the patents won are part of Intel’s plans to gain more traction in the mobile market.
Google has also shopped in the patent market again. For an undisclosed amount, it has acquired patents from the company Magnolia Broadband. The patents describe, among other things, Magnolia’s mobile transmit diversity technology. This makes it possible to send data from a smartphone or tablet to a transmission tower. This would increase data throughput considerably and make better use of the available capacity in the ether frequencies. A mobile phone or tablet would also consume less power due to the technology and mobile transmit diversity would also be applicable to existing 3G and 4G networks.
