Google to enable digital doctor visits via Helpouts video chat

Google is working on an extension of its Helpouts service aimed at assisting users in their search for medical information. It is possible to ask medical questions via a video connection with a doctor. For now it is an experiment.

A Google search engine user noted that some search results included a link to a video chat feature with a real doctor. The internet giant confirmed to Engadget that it is working on such functionality. When the search engine notices that the user is looking for medical information, for example by searching for a disease or symptoms, the option for a video call with a real doctor is shown at the top of the results.

Google speaks of a limited test for digital doctor visits. It is therefore unclear whether the feature will be rolled out to all users. During the test, Google will assume any costs for the calls. It is also not yet known which doctors and medical institutions are participating in the experiment.

It seems that with the digital doctor visits Google wants to expand its Helpouts service. This service was opened almost a year ago and is intended to provide digital assistance through video calls. This includes computer assistance. Aid providers may charge for their services. Helpouts is not yet accessible to everyone, however: an invite is needed to get in.
