Google has reportedly made it impossible for apps in Android 9.0 Pie to record calls. That’s what the developers of two such apps say. It is unknown why Google did that.

According to Call Recorder developer Boldbeast for Android, users will need root for call recording to work, while ACR’s developer – Call Recorder says there will be no workaround for the app to work on Android 9.0 Pie.

Piunikaweb points out that there have been indications that Google wanted to make call recording a standard feature in Android 9.0, but so far that has not happened. Local legislation in some countries would also make this difficult. It is unknown how many users there are of apps that record conversations. The developer of ACR says there are 200 apps in the Play Store with a total of 200 million downloads.

Google released Android 9.0 for its own Pixel phones a week and a half ago. Despite the Android version being out, there is a chance that the search giant will announce new features. That also happened last fall, when Google came with 8.1 shortly after Android 8.0.
