Google released Google News Archive Search online a few hours ago posted: A search service that can be used to search within the news published in America for the past 250 years. The search database therefore contains not only references to recent articles, such as Google News, for example, but also to original texts that were published, for example, at the time of the moon landing or the American civil war. The operation is simple: the user enters a search term and Google then presents the results. To make it easier to find the right information and to give the user an idea of the development of a topic over time, it is possible to sort the results according to the publication year of an article.

For the historical sources, use is made with permission of the archives of, among others, The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wallstreet Journal, Time Magazine and Factiva. As a result, it may happen that users are shown an excerpt from the source text, but have to pay to read the full article, which does not make Google any money. These partnership agreements expressly have no influence on the location of the sites mentioned within the search results, according to Google. Furthermore, Google News Archive Search uses an unknown number of other news sources to display more current results.
