European supervisors will jointly investigate the misuse of user data on social media in the coming years. The regulators believe that the abuse of Facebook data by Cambridge Analytica is the tip of the iceberg.
The regulators set up a working group to detect and punish this type of abuse, reports WP29 the partnership of privacy watchdogs in Europe. In the long term, the government agencies want to keep the group under review for the abuse of personal data from social media.
European supervisors do not think Facebook’s ‘sorry’ is enough and that is why the authorities want to look broader and longer-term. Although WP29 suspects that there are many more cases of misuse of user data in addition to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, the partnership does not mention any concrete companies involved or social media where that happened. However, it says that developers and data traders may have been involved.
The working group will continue to exist as WP29 if it merges with the new European Data Protection Board from 25 May. This EDPB must in practice maintain the rules of the General Data Protection Regulation, also known under the English abbreviation gdpr .
