The developer of Tweetbot has stopped developing Tweetbot after changing the conditions for using the Twitter API. Tapbots, as the company is called, is now completely focused on its client for Mastodon.

Tapbots Ivory for Mastodon

Tweetbot has existed for a total of twelve years, writes Tapbots. We’ve taken everything that made Tweetbot great and used it as a starting point for Ivory’s future. According to Tapbots, the limitations for using the API make it impossible to develop a Twitter client.

Mastodon client Ivory isn’t out yet, but the developer is now testing it in a beta version. Last week, Twitter changed the conditions for using the API. Under those new terms, developers may not use Licensed Materials to create, or attempt to create, a “replacement or similar service or product” to Twitter’s products.

Presumably, Twitter stopped this access because the company is missing out on ad revenue from these third-party apps. The api may still be used for other purposessuch as better searching for tweets, managing accounts, for advertising purposes and sharing tweets on external sites.

Update, 1:40 PM: As @jelv says, Ivory is coming out soon and Tapbots has its prices announced.
