Developer behind Gmane archive stops offering the service
Developer Lars Ingebrigtsen has announced that it will stop using the Gmane web archive. He started the service in 2002, which was aimed at archiving discussions in mailing lists and providing a clearer interface.
Ingebrigtsen writes that the site has been the target of DDoS attacks in recent weeks. Because it was hosted on his employer’s servers, he was forced to take the site offline. He adds that all this can be remedied, but that he still throws in the towel. On top of the various legal issues, it wouldn’t be worth it to him to continue with Gmane.
Among other things, the service was valuable to the open source community, in which many discussions still take place via mailing lists. Ingebrigtsen says he has moved the mta and nntp servers to a new host and offers to send the mail archive to whoever is interested in continuing Gmane. He will no longer offer the web server himself and suggests that perhaps a group or organization can take over the task, so that the service remains stable.
