Daybreak Brings DC Universe Online to Xbox One

Development studio Daybreak Game Company is releasing an Xbox One version of the free-to-play massively multiplayer online action game DC Universe Online this spring. The game was released in 2011 for PC and PS3. A PlayStation 4 version followed in 2013.

When the original version of DC Universe Online came out, the development studio behind the game was still called Sony Online Entertainment, which directly explains why the game hadn’t seen the light of day on a Microsoft console before. However, in February 2015, Sony sold the ‘SOE’ business to investment company Columbus Nova, which changed the studio’s name to Daybreak Game Company. Due to the loss of the connection with Sony, the studio was then free to develop games for the Xbox One.

Although the ties with Sony are a thing of the past, PlayStation 4 gamers remain in a privileged position when it comes to DC Universe Online. In addition to the arrival of the Xbox One version, Daybreak also announced that the PC and PS4 versions of the online game will use crossplay from the week of January 25. At that point, gamers playing on a PC can end up on the same server as players playing on a PlayStation 4. The Xbox One version will not support crossplay at launch and it is unknown if that will change at a later date.

Daybreak made the announcements in the context of the fifth anniversary of the online game, in which gamers create their own hero and use it to explore famous cities such as Metropolis and Gotham. At the same time, the studio announced new content for the game, including new Superman and Harley Quinn storylines.

In addition to DC Universe Online, Daybreak also has Planetside 2, the EverQuest series and H1Z1 in-house. Console versions are also expected of the latter game, a zombie survival game. H1Z1 is currently only playable via Steam Early Access.
