Corsair has acquired EpocCam, an iOS app that lets users use an iPhone or iPad as a wireless webcam. EpocCam is now under Corsair’s streaming arm. How much Corsair paid for EpocCam is not clear.
As of today, EpocCam falls under Elgato, a business unit for Corsair that focuses on ‘content creators’. EpocCam creator and lead developer Sami Grohn will now work as Principal Software Engineer for Elgato. According to the archived page of the iOS app, the application was previously released by Kinoni.
EpocCam is an app that allows users to use their iPhone or iPad camera as a webcam for a macOS or Windows computer. The app has been downloaded more than five million times, according to Corsair. The software works with programs such as Zoom, Skype, OBS Studio, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. Corsair says it wants to expand the app with additional apps in the future, without giving details.
The free version of EpocCam gives a resolution of 640×480 pixels. Users who pay eight dollars for the Pro version get extra features, according to Elgato, such as an increased resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, a zoom function and being able to use the phone as a microphone. The free version also comes with a watermark. According to the Kinoni site, there was also an Android version previously. It is not clear why it is not available now and whether it will ever return. According to the Web Archive, the Android version was still active until July 8.
