TU/e and Tilburg University want to start an academic training center in Den Bosch in which data research and ‘big data’ will be central. The two universities announced this on Monday at the opening of the academic year.

The research center will have to accommodate several hundred students. Three master’s degree programs will be offered at the center, which are known as Data Science, Entrepreneurship and Governance.

The master’s programs focus on the role of data research and ‘big data’, a collective term for large data sets in particular that can hardly be managed with regular data management systems, in business and politics. The TU/e will mainly take care of information technology and entrepreneurship, while Tilburg University will focus on the role of government, the economy and the law.

For the time being, the academic training center is a plan, about which more should be known by the end of this year. The universities are still investigating the feasibility of the joint initiative by assessing the need for data scientists. However, they think there is already a need for this, because research shows that companies in the Eindhoven region alone want three hundred new data scientists every year.

If the plans go ahead, the center is expected to be housed in the Mariënburg Monastery in Den Bosch. This means that the Brabant capital for the first time has a location where academic education will be offered.
