Atari mentions the 2600+ is an updated version of the 2600 with four switches and resembles the CX2600-A variant first released in 1980. The console is 20 percent smaller than the original and has a modern HDMI port and USB power supply. The updated console is powered by a Rockchip 3128 SoC and has 256MB of DDR3 memory. There is 256MB of internal storage space available on an eMMC chip.

The console comes with a similarly updated CX40+ joystick and a 10-in-1 cartridge containing the games Adventure, Combat, Dodge ‘Em, Haunted House, Maze Craze, Missile Command, RealSports Volleyball, Surround, Video Pinball and Yars ‘ Revenge. Atari also shares one list of all compatible games. Atari previously also released the VCS, which looks very similar to the 2600 after a redesign. That console serves more as a modern console with streaming support. Atari 2600 games can also be played on that console.
