AMD will not complete its acquisition of fpga manufacturer Xilinx this year, as the company previously expected, but in the first quarter of 2022. Chinese competition authorities have yet to approve the planned acquisition.
AMD said in a statement that it is making “good progress” in obtaining the required regulatory approvals for the acquisition of Xilinx. In practice, this concerns the Chinese State Administration for Market Regulation. Despite this, the acquisition was not completed by the end of 2021, as the company previously expected. AMD expects the acquisition to be completed sometime during the first quarter of 2022.
In October last year, AMD announced its plan to acquire Xilinx for $35 billion. At the beginning of 2021, authorities in Taiwan and South Korea, among others, gave approval for the takeover and the US also appeared to have no objection. At the end of July, the approval of the European Commission and the United Kingdom followed, leaving only China as a potential obstacle. It is unclear what the status of the Chinese investigation into the takeover is.
AMD wants to acquire Xilinx in order to gain an important market share in the market for FPGAs in one fell swoop. These types of programmable chips are increasingly being used for high performance network computing equipment and hardware for embedded, automotive and broadcasting applications.
