The multiplayer mode of Codemasters’ racing game Race Driver Grid will be playable with twelve players at the same time. The game uses a ranking system in which players are divided into classes from ‘Junior’ to ‘Legend’.

The online mode offers the player on Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC 32 different racing events, including the spectacular destruction derby, on 80 circuits in 15 internationally renowned locations in Japan, Europe and the United States. The races are playable with up to twelve people, where all cars can simply make contact with each other and can therefore take a lot of damage. Race Driver Grid in multiplayer mode contains the same realistic damage model as the single player variant, Codemasters reports in a statement sent Wednesday.

The game does a lot to compensate for the differences between good and less good players. For example, players race in a class that is best for their level, ranging from ‘Junior’ to ‘Legend’. Players can also minimize differences between drivers via the settings, for example by turning on ‘catch-up’, which ensures that the cars driving at the back can go faster than the cars driving in front.

The online ranking is influenced by race results, but the participants in the races are also important; a player who beats a higher ranked player earns more points. In addition to racing against each other and the rankings, Grid’s online mode offers the ability to view races and download ghost cars of the fastest laps of each track. Based on those laps, players can try to improve their driving style.
