Microsoft is testing an improved Windows Ink version in its latest Windows 11 preview build. This allows users to write in all text fields within Windows with a stylus. Currently this only works in certain applications.

The enhanced Windows Ink version is included in Windows 11 preview build 23481, which is currently available in the Dev channel. The feature allows users to enter text with a stylus across the entire Windows operating system, without the need for a keyboard. Currently, users can already write by hand in certain Windows applications, such as OneNote, but the feature does not work systemwide. Preview users can set the feature in Windows Bluetooth settings using the ‘Shell Handwriting’ option under ‘Pen & Windows Ink’.

In addition, the Windows Ink feature will receive other improvements. For example, the function should recognize handwritten text more accurately. There will also be a scratch-out function that allows users to edit or delete their text. The Windows Ink feature currently only works in English, although support for other languages is in the works. It is not yet clear when that support will appear. It is also unknown when the enhanced Windows Ink feature will be available to all users.
