Apple has announced it will improve the webcam in the Apple Studio Display with a software update following criticism from reviewers. The 12-megapixel webcam does not work as expected in the 27-inch monitor, according to Apple.

According to Apple, the webcam is not functioning properly due to ‘a bug in the system’. In a future software update, the brand plans to fix the issues. When that update comes, Apple does not say. That explains the company to The Wall Street Journal. Tech reviewer Joanna Stern noticed that the webcam in the new $1,779 Studio Display is much worse than the iPhone 11 Pro’s 12-megapixel selfie camera and even worse than the 2-megapixel webcam in the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Stern isn’t the only one who noticed the bad webcam. The Verge Editor-in-Chief Nilay Patel mentions the quality of the webcam ‘awful in good light and downright miserable in low light’. Patel writes that the webcam gives grainy image with almost no detail. He got similar results in Zoom, Photo Booth and QuickTime. An Apple spokesperson reiterated at The Verge what he also said to WSJ. The company won’t give any details on when the update is coming or what exactly will fix it.

Apple announced the Studio Display in early March. The 27″ monitor has a 5k resolution of 5120×2880 pixels and comes with a built-in 12-megapixel webcam, a six-speaker audio system and an A13 soc used exclusively to control the camera, microphones and speakers. the computing power of a connected Mac can be used for other tasks. The webcam has an ultrawide view and works with Center Stage: the software function that Apple uses to keep people in the center of the picture, even when they are moving around.

The monitor is for sale from March 18 for a price of 1779 euros. A version with nano-textured glass costs 2029 euros and a tilting and height-adjustable stand is also available for an additional cost of 460 euros.
