Valve has released a new version of the Steam Controller. The controller for the Steam Machines with SteamOS, as Valve previously announced, no longer has a touchscreen and instead features a more traditional layout with buttons.

The controller has a d-pad with buttons and four buttons labeled A, B, X and Y. Above it are buttons for, among other things, Stop and Play, according to the image that Valve has put online. The design is an elaboration of the changes that Valve announced during the Steam Dev Days in mid-January. Valve first demonstrated a first version of the controller in September last year.

Valve has left the controller trackpads in the design. By combining the trackpads and traditional buttons, the company wants to make the controller compatible with games that players normally control with controllers and with games that have mouse and keyboard controls.

The Steam Controller may undergo changes before it is finally available for sale. Valve says it is still in the development process. The controller will be on display at a game conference in San Francisco next week.

The controller is intended for Steam Machines, PCs with SteamOS that can serve as a console to stream games from the online game service.
