Valve is launching an OLED version of the Steam Deck. The screen offers HDR support, has a refresh rate of up to 90Hz and is also slightly larger with a size of 7.4″. The company is releasing two models, with 512GB and 1TB storage, which can be ordered from November 16.
Just like the LCD version, the screen offers a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. With HDR content a maximum brightness of 1000cd/m² can be achieved, otherwise the peak brightness is 600cd/m². The SDR display of the previous edition has a peak brightness of 400cd/m². In addition, a refresh rate of a maximum of 90Hz can be achieved, in contrast to the maximum 60Hz of the LCD versions.
The OLED models have an AMD APU built at 6nm, while the LCD version has a 7nm APU. The specifications are otherwise the same. For example, the GPU has eight compute units, just like the previous version, but runs on them according to Valve guaranteed at a speed of 1.6GHz, while the LCD variant runs at a speed of between 1 and 1.6GHz.
Furthermore, this version supports Wi-Fi 6E, which according to Valve increases the download speed by up to three times. The manufacturer also promises less latency when users play online. The OLED model also has faster Lpddr5 memory that should deliver speeds of 6400MT/s, while the memory of the LCD models delivers 5500MT/s.
Furthermore, the new variant has a larger battery of 50Wh, which according to Valve should provide between three and twelve hours of gameplay. The 40Wh battery of the previous version provides two to eight hours of gameplay, according to the manufacturer. In addition, the device weighs 30g less than the previous model and Valve promises that the heatsink has been improved.
Two OLED models will be available: one with a 512GB NVMe SSD and one with 1TB storage. These cost 569 and 679 euros respectively. The most expensive version also has an anti-glare etched glass layer over the screen. The OLED models can be ordered from November 16. It is not yet clear when exactly they will be delivered.
In addition, Valve has announced that the 64GB and 512GB versions of the LCD model of the Steam Deck will be phased out. Both models have received a permanent price reduction and now cost 369 and 469 euros respectively.
