Ubisoft has announced a remake of the first Splinter Cell game. The updated game is under development at Ubisoft Toronto. The remake will be made in the company’s Snowdrop engine. Ubisoft does not report a release date.
Ubisoft writes that the Splinter Cell remake is currently in “the earliest development stage.” The game will not be released anytime soon. The remake will be completely remade using the Snowdrop engine, according to Ubisoft. That engine was previously used for The Division 1 and 2. Snowdrop will also be used for future games like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and the upcoming Star Wars game that Ubisoft is working on.
According to Ubisoft, the remake will not be an open world game. Instead, the game will have linear levels just like the original games in the franchise. The company also talks about ‘new-gen’ visuals with dynamic lighting and shadows. The remake also gets gameplay improvements to make the game more modern. The studio also states that the development team wants to keep a balance between ‘the spirit of the old and the comfort of the new’.
The first Splinter Cell game was released 19 years ago, in 2002. The most recent Splinter Cell game, Blacklist, was released in 2013. The latter was also developed by Ubisoft Toronto. Since then, that studio has worked on Far Cry 5 and 6, Assassin’s Creed Unity and Watch Dogs 2 and Watch Dogs: Legion. There have been rumors recently that Ubisoft is working on a new Splinter Cell game.
