The hole in your iPhone screen will become much smaller next year

The hole in the iPhone’s screen, which houses the selfie camera, will become much smaller in 2026 with the arrival of the iPhone 18 , according to sources within the production line.

iPhone 18 gets a smaller camera hole

Ever since the iPhone 14 Pro, we’ve had to stare at it daily: the Dynamic Island, or the pill-shaped camera hole at the top of the screen. It houses not only the selfie camera, but also the proximity sensor and all the Face ID sensors. But that’s all set to change with the iPhone 18!

According to a Weibo leak from leaker Smart Pikachu, the iPhone 18 line will feature new screen technology that allows all Face ID sensors to be placed under the screen. This makes the camera hole much smaller, leaving only a small circle for the selfie camera.

Not all models yet

The change likely won’t be implemented on all iPhone 18 models. We do expect the smaller camera hole to appear on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which will be unveiled in September 2026.

There are still some questions about the iPhone Air 2, which will be released around the same time. We expect the “regular” iPhone 18, unveiled in the spring of 2027, to feature a traditional Dynamic Island. This also applies to the iPhone 18e, which will also not be released until early 2027.
