SUSE creates installation guide openSUSE as Windows 10 subsystem

SUSE has written a guide on how Windows 10 users can install the openSUSE Linux distribution on the Windows Subsystem for Linux. After that, users can use the openSUSE tools in Windows 10.

By default, the Windows Subsystem for Linux runs on Ubuntu. However, SUSE CEO Hannes Kühnemund says he prefers the subsystem to run on openSUSE or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, so he has written a short guide for that. Options are currently limited to openSUSE Leap 42.2 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP2.

The steps involve replacing Ubuntu’s root file system with SUSE’s. After a few steps, users can use SUSE within WSL. However, SUSE does not guarantee the functioning of their Linux distro within Windows 10.

OpenSUSE is a Linux distro specially developed for software developers and system administrators. To this end, the distribution has onboard tools such as YaST, which makes it easy for administrators to create partitions, implement system updates and configure systems. SUSE is being developed by a community called the openSUSE Project.
