Sony has filed a patent for a PlayStation controller with a built-in charger for wireless earbuds. The earplugs are stored in slots in the controller, for example behind the touchpad. It is not known if and when such a controller will be released.

Sony filed the patent on April 7, 2022although it has only recently been made public, GameRant was the first to notice. This is a largely ‘normal’ controller, which contains two slots for storing wireless earbuds. The controller can not only charge the earbuds in this way, but also connect them to the console.

The patent shows various options for storing the earplugs, including behind the touchpad on the controller. There are storage spots mentioned in the controller handles. “Using the controller as a storage and charger for earbuds eliminates the need to manage two separate devices,” Sony writes in its patent. This should simplify the user experience of the devices.

It is unknown if or when Sony will actually release a PlayStation controller with built-in earbud storage. The company did announce its Pulse Explore wireless earbuds earlier this year, which are specifically intended for use with the PS5 and the PlayStation Portal handheld. It is unknown if Sony will introduce the alleged controller for use with these two consoles and those earbuds.
