Sony introduces its A9 III system camera. This camera gets a global shutter instead of a rolling shutter, which according to the manufacturer should prevent distortions in both photos and videos. The camera will be released next spring for 7,000 euros.

The Sony A9 III features about a 24.6 megapixel full-frame sensor. This is the first system camera from Sony that has a global shutter. This allows the camera to capture every pixel simultaneously when taking photos and videos. Most system cameras have ‘rolling shutters’, which are pixels capture in rowswhich can cause distortions.

Thanks to this new shutter, the A9 III can also record 4k120fps videos without cropping. When taking photos, the camera supports a burst of up to 120 frames per second without blackout or distortion. The maximum burst length is 192 frames. The camera also supports 14bit raw images and gets an improved autofocus system that works in real time and uses a separate AI processor. The camera can also pre-capture 120 frames before pressing the shutter button.

The camera supports shutter speeds of up to 1/80,000 second, or 1/16,000 second during bursts. The A9 III supports an ISO of up to 51,200. Sony doesn’t mention low-light performance. The camera has two card slots, which work for both CFexpress type A cards and SD cards. The electronic viewfinder has an OLED panel with 9.44 million dots and offers refresh rates of 60, 120 and 240fps.

The Sony A9 III can be pre-ordered from Wednesday, November 8 for 7,000 euros. The camera will actually be available in the spring of 2024. Sony has not yet given a concrete release date.
