At zonelabs.com we read about a new beta release of the popular firewall ZoneAlarm, numbered 4.0.111.004. The 4.0 series of the software is still under development, which means that there is no stable release yet. However, if a few bugs don’t bother you, it might be a nice idea to play around with the new features in ZoneAlarm 4.0:
- Hacker Incident Reporting — Lets you fight back against hackers (locate and report)
- Cache Cleaner — Periodically rids your computer of excess files such as cookies and temporary Internet files, freeing up disk space and avoiding privacy leaks.
- Expert Panel — Enables experienced users to create custom pc-wide or single program-based rules, controlling inbound and outbound access by IP address, port, time of day, and other variables
- Outbound MailSafe — Prevents viruses from e-mailing themselves automatically to everyone in your address book
- Automatic VPN Configuration — Simplifies configuration for VPN use by automatically configuring Zone and port permissions
- Backup and Restore — Enables you to save a particular configuration of security rules as a separate file, then restore that configuration later
[break]Since the previous beta, 4.0.108, the following has been improved:[/break]
- Backup & Restore: Authentication options become unchecked after restore. Can’t disable open process and Program Logging Custom Option not working properly
- Backup and Restore “freezes” UI
- Program alert for “-nohome” when doing a more info on an Alert
- ZoneAlarm Pro UI doesn’t come up
- Program listing displays entire program path instead of program name only

- Issue with cache cleaner when cleaning cookies
- Expert Panel: Port Range doesn’t work
- Open Process not enabled when zap upgraded from 3.7 to 4.0 with Program Control on high
