Hendrik Holtmann has a new version of smcFanControl on his site this afternoon made available. With the help of smcFanControl it is possible to adjust the rotation speed of the cooling fan(s) of a MacBook or MacBook Pro as desired. This makes it possible to bypass the System Management Control of the Apple laptop and to let the fan(s) work at a speed that you can set yourself, at a speed between 1000 and 6000 revolutions per minute. In addition, the program can automatically apply the adjusted rotational speed when Mac OS X boots. A user account with admin rights is required to use smcFanControl.
At the bottom of this post is a small test by smcFanControl, where the processor of a MacBook Pro was given a bit of work and warmed up to just over 80 degrees Celsius. After setting both fans to maximum speed – and not what the screenshot indicates at 1337 rpm – the processor’s temperature dropped to a pleasant 31 degrees Celsius after about 8 minutes. The version that Holtmann has put online this afternoon – and with which the mini-test was carried out – has been given version number 1.1 and is the successor to the 1.0 release, also released today. The new smcFanControl can be downloaded as a zip file for Mac OS X from our file server by clicking on this link and is made available under the GPL license. What exactly has changed in version 1.1, you can read below:
smcFanControl 1.1 includes some enchantments and bug fixes:
