Software update: O&O Defrag V6 beta

Anyone who still uses FAT as a file system must regularly defragment their hard disk to keep up with the pace of the computer. However, not everyone is equally satisfied with the program that Microsoft provides for that purpose. R&D saw a market in it and has written a professional program for defragmenting your beloved data. The software is very original called O&D Defrag.

Although according to the creators of the program version V4 already delivered a great quality, it could still be better. V6, which is now in development, should show that. The software is still in beta phase, but those who like to play with new stuff can enjoy Build 518 of O&O Defrag V6 Professional and Server Edition. According to the developers, both variants have been extensively overhauled, among other things the layout and the built-in features have been greatly improved. The result looks like this. • NEW! O&O Defrag V6 uses all the possibilities of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. You can defragment a variety of system files such as the Master File Table or the Registry online.
• NEW! O&O Defrag V6 includes IntelligentPowerControl technology. As soon as you unplug your notebook from the mains power, O&O Defrag V6 switches to “Pause” mode. Therefore, no power is used by the defragmentation and you can get on with your work at full power! Defragmentation will automatically be resumed as soon as you reconnect your notebook to the mains electricity.
• NEW! O&O Defrag V6 creates a detailed report after every defragmentation. This report includes all relevant information such as the fragmentation level of your hard disk, the duration and outcome of the defragmentation, as well as details of the most heavily fragmented files.
• NEW! O&O Defrag V6 brings you OneButtonDefrag. This ‘smart’ function automatically senses the most appropriate defragmentation method for your hard disks and then draws up an optimum timetable for scheduled runs of O&O Defrag V6. OneButtonDefrag – simply defragment!
• Improved! O&O Defrag V6 analyzes and defragments your hard disks quicker and more efficiently than ever. You can now sort out your hard disks around five to eight times more quickly, thereby regaining lost performance!
• Improved! O&O Defrag V6 uses open standards for communication. O&O Defrag V6 Server and O&O Defrag V6 Professional now communicate via TCP/IP. Possible sources of error are therefore eliminated and the data exchange between server and client is significantly speeded up.
• NEW! O&O Defrag V6 supports Microsoft’s Active Directory Services. You can transfer existing structures in your active directory by “drag and drop” into the structure of O&O Defrag V6.
• NEW! O&O Defrag V6 supports the newest Microsoft server technology. O&O Defrag V6 supports all editions of the Microsoft Server 2003.

[break]Those who are going to try out the new version of O&O Defrag should pay attention to a few points. First of all, it is strongly recommended to uninstall the previous version of the program before you start working with V6. Firewall users should also be careful: since the communication between the base and the GUI of the program is based on TCP/IP, problems can arise. In that case you have to open port 50300. O&O Defrag ensures that external connections are not allowed.
