CentOS is an open source operating system based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux that is designed for use in enterprise environments. The name is an abbreviation of Community Enterprise Operating System. Unlike RHEL, CentOS is free to use. In terms of popularity, CentOS has been on the top of the list in the last twelve months ninth place. A new version of CentOS appears every two years, which is then provided with updates for seven years. At the beginning of July, version 7.0 of CentOS was released and now another update from the 6.x branch has appeared. The full release notes for this release are here to find. In short, these are the main changes:

Major changes:

  • Enhanced SCSI unit attention handling to enable responding to certain unit commands.
  • The OpenvSwitch module is now available as a kernel module.
  • New HyperV daemons have been added to enable/improve running CentOS in Microsoft HyperV hosts.
  • As a technology preview 6.6 can be run as a 2nd generation VM on Microsoft’s 2012R2 HyperV.
  • keepalive and haproxy are now fully supported.
  • Support added for the Intel Wildcat platform.
  • OpenJDK 8 has been added as technology preview.
