Spread the love

The GNOME desktop environment for Linux is very popular with a lot of people, not least because the software supports the hassle-free use of multiple desktops at the same time. The only drawback is that the buttons to switch between these desktops are very small, and it is practically impossible to see what you have running on your other desktop. The developers of 3D-Desktop thought it should be nicer, and developed a full-screen 3D desktop switching program for GNOME. Besides the fact that you can clearly see what is happening on the other desktop, the animations and the 3D effect also make it fun to watch.

A new version of 3D-Desktop has recently appeared on the scene: number 0.2.6. This is an open source application hosted on SourceForge, and as we are used to from such projects, a neat changelog is available:

  • Add ‘f’ as toggle for ‘random fun mode’ and –noautofun [Phil]
  • Avoid 3 sec delay when starting 3ddeskd from 3ddesk [Gregory Kovriga]
  • Use a lower priority for the daemon to lessons screen cap hit (use 12)
  • Add autoacquire feature to acquire current desktop every 2 seconds
  • Add random view option
  • Improvements to memory usage [Toph]
  • Add –dontexit flag to not exit after a goto
  • Flush message queue before activation
  • Have goto movement start right away rather then wait for entry movement
  • Show screen numbers greater than 10 correctly [Robert Wittams]

[break]The new version of the software can be downloaded as an RPM package for Red Hat 9 and SuSE 9.0† If you have another distro, you should source code compile.
