Software errors make operation of locks Afsluitdijk unreliable

Due to a large number of errors in the software for the operation of the bridges and locks at the Afsluitdijk, bridge and lock keepers cannot trust that their control commands are carried out correctly.

Omrop Fryslân gives as an example that the systems indicate that a bridge is still open, while the cameras show that it is in fact closed. Major security features of the software will be fixed in the spring, which is expected to result in five to seven nights of shutdown.

The problems date back to 2016, when the software was replaced. That led to Rijkswaterstaat having research carried out last year. A large number of flaws with the software and technology came to light. Rijkswaterstaat subsequently installed more cameras and deployed bridge operators to manage the situation.

A new investigation should reveal how things could go wrong with the delivery in 2016 and who is responsible. According to Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Van Nieuwenhuizen – Wijbenga, it will take another year and a half to two years before everything meets the requirements again.

Also in North Holland things went wrong with software for bridges. The software for the Princess Amalia Bridge at Westknollendam has to be adapted so that it is ready twenty weeks later than planned. The software is necessary to connect the bridge to the control center in Heerhugowaard. The Princess Amalia Bridge should be ready by the end of August 2019. It is unknown what the problem with the software is.
