WhatsApp is working on a version for the iPad. WABetaInfo reports this. Despite the Apple tablet being on the market for more than nine years, the Facebook subsidiary has not yet made a version for the larger screen and has stuck with support for iPhones.

WhatsApp for the iPad has no other functions than the version for iOS, but mainly has a different interface, WABetaInfo reports. The site found clues to the iPad version in the iOS app and has taken screenshots of the upcoming iPad app. That the version has code in the iOS app indicates that it is a universal app.

It is not possible to use WhatsApp on an iPad and iPhone with the same phone number, as end-to-end encryption would no longer function properly. The app works on all iPads, but it does need its own phone number to register. The app is therefore mainly for people with an iPad with a 4G connection or for people with an iPad and a phone without WhatsApp. There will also be a version of WhatsApp that works via WhatsApp Web, allowing users to use the same number on iPhone and iPad.

The interface has support for split-view on the big screen, including in chats and in the settings. In addition, the camera menu on the iPad is missing. According to WABetaInfo, the beta will probably be in the next test version of WhatsApp. It is not yet known when the app for the tablet will be released.
