According to Korean media, LG and Samsung are planning to introduce portable monitors with their own battery that are specifically made to work with smartphones.

The manufacturers would like to target smartphone consumers with the monitors who want to watch video on a large screen and edit video, photos and documents more easily than is possible on a small screen. According to the Korean ET News, LG and Samsung are expected to be a new market, in between that of laptops and tablets. The site mentions the name ‘Cloud Top’, but it is unclear whether the manufacturers use this name.

Samsung’s monitor would be called the Dexbook and it would be a screen with a diagonal of 14 inches and a full-HD resolution. According to ET News, the weight is less than a kilogram and the battery capacity is 10,000mAh. With Samsung’s DeX app, users of some Galaxy devices can already connect a large screen, in combination with a mouse and keyboard.

The comparable device from LG will also get a 14″ screen with full HD resolution. This screen would weigh 600 grams, but would also have a lower battery capacity of 5000mAh. According to the report, the prices are between those of tablets and laptops. LG has already been rumored to be working on a desktop mode for its smartphones.

It is unclear whether it concerns touchscreens or whether operation must be done via mouse and keyboard. The connection is wireless or via a cable. For laptops and desktops, monitor manufacturers have been offering portable monitors that can be used as an extra screen for years. They usually have to be connected with a USB cable.
