Capcom has announced Resident Evil Village, the successor to Resident Evil 7. The new horror game once again uses a first-person perspective. The game will be released in 2021 for next-gen consoles and on Steam.

Sony showed Resident Evil Village in its PlayStation 5 presentation, but Capcom reports that the game will also be released for the Xbox Series X. An exact release date has not yet been announced, but the makers say they will provide more details at the end of the summer.

In a first trailer, the makers show images of the environment and discuss the story of Resident Evil Village. The game will be made with Capcom’s own RE Engine, which has also been used for Resident Evil 7 and Devil May Cry 5, among others. For the next-gen consoles, optimizations have been made to get the most out of the engine, the developers say.

While Capcom doesn’t call the game Resident Evil 8, players can consider the game as such. The title also subtly refers to the number eight; if Village is capitalized, the first four characters correspond to the Roman numeral VIII, or 8.
