Plex users can buy or rent TV series and movies starting next month. This is what journalist Janko Roettgers says based on unappointed Plex board members. ‘Most’ studios would already want to offer content, more studios should follow after release.

Users should be able to rent and buy TV series and films in early February, writes Roettgers. The journalist often writes about streaming news on his Lowpass platform. It is not clear whether the existing free content that currently has advertisements will be expanded, or whether users will soon be able to watch that content without advertisements.

Four years ago, the company announced that users would also be able to pay for films or TV series, by renting or purchasing them. A year ago Plex said, according to TechCrunch was still working on this, but the company then indicated that it was encountering technical problems. For example, the service had difficulty with the DRM of the content and bugs in other services that needed to be resolved, which meant that the rental and purchase store could not be worked on. Last year, Plex said it expected the purchase and rental store to be available in the second quarter of that year.
