Plex is making its Home Theater PC app available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Plex is also announcing support for Linux. The service has published a desktop and htpc app for Linux in the Snap download store.

Plex announces official Linux support with the arrival of a desktop and htpc-snap for the service. The Plex Desktop Linux App provides access to movies, series, and music on Plex servers from Linux distributions that support Snap packages. The app is available in Canonical’s Snap Store. Plex is also working on variants based on the Flatpak packaging format, which will be released through Flathub. Until now, there were only desktop apps from Plex for Windows and macOS.

Simultaneously with the desktop app for Linux Plex HTPC will appear. This app is available for Windows, macOS and as Snap for Linux. This app is optimized for use on large screens. Plex speaks of the spiritual successor to the TV mode of the Plex Media Player. Plex announced it would discontinue this player in 2019, but users made it clear that the replacement, the desktop app, was not suitable for use on large screens. Plex promised to come up with a solution for htpc use. The Plex HTPC app includes support for use with game controllers and audio pass-through.
