Plex has released a Plex HTPC app for Windows and macOS. A Linux version will follow later. The software has an interface specifically made to be viewed on a large screen.

The Plex HTPC app evolved from the design of the Plex Media Player TV client, according to Plex. Two years ago, Plex revamped its desktop app and with it the Plex Media Player client for HTPCs disappeared. According to Plex, the new HTPC app includes everything users need for a home theater, including support for remote controls and the ability to switch refresh rates.

The software uses the framework of the Plex desktop app for Windows and macOS, but combines it with the interface that Plex uses for its apps for smart TVs and consoles. Both those apps and the desktop app are still being actively developed and regularly receive new functions. Those features are also coming to the Plex HTPC app.

Plex HTPC is designed to run full screen on a TV or projector with a 16:9 ratio. There is a choice of resolutions of 1280×720, 1920×1080 and 3840×2160 pixels. For now, the software is available for Windows 10 and macOS 10.13 or newer. Linux support is coming soon, according to Plex. The Plex HTPC software can run alongside older versions of the Plex Media Player and the Plex desktop app.
