Pebble founder launches paid universal messaging service

Pebble founder Eric Michigovsky has proposed a paid service that works with all major chat apps. The service must combine messages from WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord and Apple iMessage.

The service is called Beeper and becoming a customer is only possible by invitation for the time being. There are many more services to combine different chat apps, but Beeper wants to distinguish itself with the support of iMessage. That only works on Apple devices.

Beeper wants to make that possible by asking customers to install software on a Mac computer that is always online and that can forward messages. If customers don’t have a Mac, Beeper will send an old jailbroken iPhone with the Beeper app already on it.

The service must work on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android and must be a universal inbox for messages. The app works on the Matrix platform. Beeper supports 15 messaging services and costs $10 a month.

The idea of universal messaging has been around almost as long as messaging itself. Nimbuzz, Pidgin and Franz, among others, already did similar things, but they were often not usable cross-platform.
