The sequel to Path of Exile is unlikely to be released until 2022. The development of the game is being delayed due to the corona virus, Grinding Gear director Chris Wilson said in an interview.

In an interview with PCgamer, Wilson does not give a firm release date for Path of Exile 2. When asked if the game won’t be released until 2022, he replies: “Yes, that seems accurate.” Wilson spoke to the website about the upcoming successor to the original game, set twenty years later. According to him, the development of the game is being delayed due to the corona virus.

This would mainly be because the game developer from New Zealand is having trouble attracting new talent. “We are struggling to hire international workers because New Zealand’s borders are still closed,” Wilson said. “That’s holding back the exponential growth of our team. The speed of our development is not going as we hoped.” Another problem, Wilson says, is that work on existing updates to the original game is also slowing down due to all the working from home, also a result of the pandemic. That would play into the delay of the sequel. Wilson says the developer can probably give a definitive release date for Path of Exile 2 by the end of this year.
