Passwords of zombie game DayZ forum users have been stolen
An email from Bohemia Interactive, the developer of zombie game DayZ, shows that the game’s forum has been hacked. According to the publisher, all usernames, email addresses and passwords from the forum were downloaded by hackers.
In the email says Bohemia that the passwords were not stored as standard text, but in a more secure form. Presumably the passwords are hashed. The developer recommends that users of forums.dayzgame.com who use the same password for other services also change their password.
According to Bohemia, the theft of the data is the result of a recent security incident. To prevent this in the future, the IPBoard login system will be replaced by Bohemia Account within two weeks. According to the developer, this is a purpose-built service already used by Bohemia Interactive Forums and the Store. Until the service is adapted to use the new login system, the forum will not be available.
On January 23, Bohemia also announced that its forums had been the target of an attack. Then it was recommended to change passwords just to be safe. DayZ itself was also temporarily off the air on February 4 to improve security.
