OCZ will release a do-it-yourself notebook especially for gamers later this year. End users can customize the laptop to their own needs, but sellers can also trade their own version.

The DIY notebooks that OCZ will release this year bring, can be phased out by the consumer. The company only supplies a barebone and the desired components. As standard, the DIY laptop comes with a 15.4″ wxga display and a Geforce 8600M with 512MB of memory, but the video card can probably be changed given the intended users. Other standard components include an 8x dual-layer DVD burner, a PM965 northbridge and ICH8M southbridge from Intel, four USB 2.0 ports, an Expresscard slot and a fingerprint reader.

The laptop must support both regular hard drives and SSDs via a SATA connection. Components such as a bluetooth 2.0 module, a TV tuner and an Intel 4965AGN wireless network adapter can be supplied as an option. With the standard battery of nine cells, the laptop weighs more than three kilos and measures 36.2 cm by 28.6 cm, while the thickness is 3.8 cm. According to OCZ product manager Eugene Chang, the notebook finally offers users the opportunity to assemble and build a laptop just like a desktop. To this end, OCZ will supply components that are guaranteed to work with the system and will provide free telephone support in addition to detailed instructions for self-assembly. The DIY notebooks will be covered by a full warranty; a price and date when the laptops can be expected have not yet been announced.
