NPO stops support for native Start app for Philips and Sony TVs, among others

The NPO will stop supporting the native Start app for certain smart TVs from December 1. The streaming app will be completely technically renewed and will then be available for all platforms on which Start can already be used.

So far, several TV manufacturers offer a version of the NPO Start application through their own ecosystem. The NPO says that the updated app should make the Start platform ‘more stable, more user-friendly and more personal’. Content must load faster and stutter less with the new app. The updated platform is via the web can already be seen and will therefore also be released as a new app from December 1. According to the NPO, users can cast the app from Android and iOS with additional hardware to ‘outdated smart TVs’. Furthermore, the upgrade will be released for all platforms for which the Start app is already available appears from a faq.

Due to the changes to the public broadcaster’s streaming platform, support for the native app on smart TVs from the following manufacturers will end:

  • Phillips
  • Panasonic
  • Loewe
  • Hisense
  • Sony
  • HbbTV
