Nokia 9 PureView with five cameras will be released in March for 599 euros

HMD has announced its Nokia 9 PureView with five cameras. The device is equipped with an image processor from Light, with which the information from all cameras is combined. HMD has partnered with Adobe for support in Lightroom.

The five-camera module consists of two RGB sensors and three monochrome sensors, all with a 12-megapixel resolution and a lens with an aperture of f/1.8. By omitting the color filters, those black-and-white cameras can theoretically capture more light and capture more detail. The final result is a color photo.

According to HMD, photos taken with the Nokia 9 PureView have a dynamic range of 12.4 stops and can be focused afterwards using a depth map with a resolution of 12 megapixels. Thanks to a collaboration with Google, this also works in the Photos application of Android.

Jpg files created with the Nokia 9 PureView have a 12-megapixel resolution. It is also possible to save dng raw files and edit them on the phone with Adobe Lightroom Mobile.

For the Nokia 9 PureView, HMD has teamed up with British company Light, which specializes in computational photography. Light is known for its L16 camera, which incorporates sixteen cameras. The Nokia 9 contains a custom asic from Light, for controlling the cameras. HMD also claims that the device is the first smartphone that uses all the capabilities of the Snapdragon 845-soc when it comes to image processing.

The Nokia 9 has a water-resistant housing with an aluminum frame, the front and back are equipped with glass. The device is 8mm thick and supports wireless charging according to the Qi standard. There is a fingerprint scanner behind the screen. That screen is a 6 “oled panel, without a notch, with a 2k resolution. The battery has a capacity of 3320mAh and charging is via the USB-c connection. The Android 9 device does not have a 3.5mm connection.

HMD will release the Nokia 9 from March 15 for a suggested retail price of 599 euros. For that money, buyers get a version with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage.
