Netflix has announced that it will start offering content with high dynamic range playback. In the coming months, such videos should appear, including from the Marco Polo and Daredevil series. Netflix also releases new apps.

The video streaming company announced its plans for HDR content during a meeting at Mobile World Congress, Engadget reports. In order to display video images with HDR support, Netflix has developed several compression algorithms so that content can be streamed with high efficiency; that should limit the amount of bandwidth required. Furthermore, Netflix wants to provide much more 4k content this year, something the company started in 2014.

As far as own content is concerned, Netflix also has the necessary plans: for example, thirty new series should be shown on the video platform this year and ten films, a number of documentaries and videos for children are planned. This concerns content that is made exclusively for Netflix, as is also the case with the popular Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards.

Netflix also wants to provide its applications for Android and iOS with new functionality. For example, later this year, users will have more options to manage their data usage, for example by asking the software to play video in a lower quality, in order to save data. In addition, a ‘second screen’ functionality will be introduced for content viewed via the Chromecast, allowing users to see metadata of the video they are watching. That data is then displayed on a mobile device that runs on Android or iOS, and can provide information about actors, for example.
